In 1988, S.N. Popova graduated from the Mathematical Faculty of the Udmurt State University and started postgraduate studies under the guidance of E.L. Tonkov.
In 1992, she defended her candidate’s thesis entitled “Problems of Controlling the Lyapunov Exponents” and received her candidate’s degree from the dissertation committee of the Nizhnii Novgorod State University.
In 2005, she defended her doctoral thesis entitled “Control of Asymptotic Invariants of Linear Systems” written under the guidance of Professor E.L.Tonkov, and received her doctoral degree from the dissertation committee of the Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Yekaterinburg) .
